B.S. Report: Georgia versus Auburn

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – This Saturday in Athens, the Georgia Bulldogs will host the Auburn Tigers.

Now don’t tell Tucker Sargent this, but Auburn should kill Georgia. They are the better team.

Auburn might be the one team that no one wants to play right now. They have gone from a joke to a potential national championship contender in two months. When the season started, Auburn had no quarterback and we didn’t know who would be the running back. They finally left Sean White out there at quarterback and Kamryn Pettway has become a star at running back. Plus, Auburn’s defensive line is tremendous. Yes, Auburn should beat the heck out of Georgia. But you know, who cares?

Yes, who cares.

Now, as a graduate of UGA, I want Georgia to win. My realistic expectations, however, are in play here. Georgia is not like Auburn. They have a freshman quarterback who has no offensive line and receivers who drop balls. They have a new head coach who knows he doesn’t have the roster he needs to compete. Kirby Smart knows he has a long way to go. And… who cares.

Saturday I’m going to Athens. It’s going to be a perfect day. It’s going to be sunny and 64 degrees. The game will start at 3:30, so tailgating will be in order. You see, the Georgia–Auburn game is a great rivalry. Georgia has had Auburn’s number recently, but it’s just one of those games that sticks out on the schedule. We football fans love rivalries. We love games like Georgia–Auburn. We love a game where there is a little bit of hate, a little bit of angst regardless of the records. The only time I have been to Auburn was in 2010, when they were on their way to a national championship. But I admit even going over there, the environment was great.

When Auburn comes to Athens, the environment is tremendous. These rivalries are what make us love college football. Everyone has always said that Auburn is like Georgia’s cousin – you know, that competitive cousin that you certainly are glad you see only once a year at the holidays and not more often. Auburn’s not in Georgia’s division, but this game always means something. It does this year, as Auburn needs to beat the Dawgs to keep this roll alive. And again, they should beat Georgia. That part of the day may not be fun, especially if it gets out of hand.

But Saturday will be what college football is all about – great cool, fall weather with passionate fans who love their team on a beautiful campus with great friends and hopefully a great game. Maybe we’ll be surprised by that part.

Just think. Next week Georgia will host Louisiana – Lafayette – the Rajin Cajuns. That will be just another game on the schedule, but this week – Georgia and Auburn – this will be why we love college football.
